The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) is one of the top ranked hands-on science centers in the United States and has an international reputation for its innovative exhibits and educational programs. Located in Portland, Oregon, OMSI features five exhibition halls, hundreds of hands-on exhibits, an OMNIMAX Dome Theatre, a Planetarium, and the USS Blueback – the last active diesel fast attack submarine in the Navy. The concept of OMSI was born more than 100 years ago in the mind of a famed naturalist, John Cyprian Stevens. Today, the museum serves over one million visitors and students who participate in education programs. The number of employees fluctuates with the season, depending on increased demand during programs such as summer camps and classes.
The museum education department, which currently uses the work scheduler ShiftPlanning, has about 90 employees including paid staff, interns and those involved with work study programs. These employees are spread out over five exhibit halls and seven hands-on labs.

Our previous method of scheduling was to use an Excel spreadsheet. A few of the drawbacks were that only one person could access the document at a time, the formulas used to roll the data together were easily broken and access required the use of a museum computer.
The work scheduler ShiftPlanning has streamlined the scheduling process, making it easier to keep track of hours and helping us to regulate overtime, equal out the time dispersed to on-call educators and provide reports to the volunteer services department which tracks interns and work study employees. In the past, using the Excel program required us to print out schedules for the daily morning check-ins and they would often be outdated within a day or two. Now, we use ipads or other mobile devices to see the schedule in real time at the morning meetings. This approach ensures we have the most up-to-date information and are able to provide the best customer service and experience to museum visitors.
