Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, the Springfield First Aid Squad provides emergency medical services (EMS) to the residents of Springfield, those who live, work, and play in our town and those who are “just passing through.” The sixty-five volunteers come from all ages and from all walks of life, enabling us to provide emergency aid to those in need at no cost.
The Springfield First Aid Squad is a private, non-profit, tax-exempt organization separate from the Township of Springfield. Unlike other emergency services in town, we do not rely on tax dollars for our daily operating expenses and none of our members are paid for their work. Instead we rely on donations to cover our operating expenses, which include vehicle and equipment purchases and maintenance, training and other supplies.
Founded on March 18, 1949, the Squad has adapted to new advances in emergency medical service techniques and technology – cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) hadn’t even been invented yet when the Squad began operations.
While the improvements in medicine have enabled us to provide better quality care, the changes in technology and increases in membership has prompted us to find better ways at organizing our shifts and training sessions.

While at first we used simple Excel spreadsheets, we began looking for a dynamic online solution that would also centralize communication and keep our members informed of schedule changes.
We were drawn to the work scheduler ShiftPlanning because it enables us to do all this. Though to date we’re primarily using the scheduling features; we’re slowly trying to transition more of our users to use the Message Wall and shift trade features. The work scheduler provides a user-friendly interface for members to swap shifts and gives us one easy place for members to message each other and the rest of the Squad.
It has reduced the headache of publishing shifts… – Julian Quintanilla – Springfield First Aid Squad
